For the first time in many years in the Diocese of Leeds, the Diocesan Bishop publicly conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation, followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, according to the books of 1962.
On Thursday 23rd November at St Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford, Bishop Marcus confirmed Leo Williamson and Eva Barrow, who took as their Saints' names Ladislaus and Lucia.
Their Confirmations were followed by Pontifical Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, with O Salutaris Hostia and Tantum Ergo accompanied on the organ by George Watson. The hymns also included Veni, Creator Spiritus and O Purest of Creatures.
This was only the Bishop's second service in the Extraordinary Form and was much appreciated by those who attended - about thirty in all - and not least by the two young people who had asked to be confirmed according to the Old Rite and their Sponsors, family and friends.
The Deacon was Fr Michael Hall, Subdeacon Canon Timothy Wiley; the Rev'd Expositor was Father Timothy Whitwell and Father Kevin Driver attended in white choir. Messrs Hirst, Nicyperowicz and Walker served with Josef and Fabian Walker who acted as mitre and crozier bearers.
In addition to being a thriving and diverse parish in which up to 40 different languages are spoken, St Joseph's, Bradford has been appointed by Bishop Marcus as the home of the regular Latin Mass in the Extraordinary Form: every Sunday at 12:30 hrs.
