Fr Tony is on the Road to Rome!

Fr Anthony Rosso, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes and St Joseph’s Parish in Ingrow and Haworth will be heading for Rome, as one of only two priests from England and Wales to attend an international meeting of ‘Parish Priests for the Synod’.

The meeting will take place from Sunday 28 April at the Fraterna Domus in Sacrofano near Rome, and will conclude with an audience with Pope Francis on Thursday 2 May. Along with Fr Marcus Holden of Southwark Diocese, Fr Tony – who studied in Rome at the Venerable English College – will be one of just 300 parish priests recommended by their Bishops to represent the diverse views, pastoral contexts and experiences of priests in parish life across the world.

Bishop Marcus and Archbishop John Wilson were the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales (CBCEW) participants in the First Session of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops which took place between 4 and 29 October 2023. The General Assembly’s Synthesis Report identified the need to ‘develop ways for a more active involvement of deacons, priests and bishops in the synodal process during the coming year’.

Fr Tony will be participating in the by-now-familiar ’round-tables’ for the sharing of best practices, workshops around pastoral proposals, dialogue with experts and liturgical celebrations. The results of the meeting will contribute to the drafting of the Instrumentum laboris: the working document for the Second Session of the Synodal Assembly, which Bishop Marcus has once again been asked to attend on behalf of the CBCEW in October of this year.

The worldwide meeting includes parish priests from both the Latin Rite and the Oriental Catholic Churches, to which Fr Tony is no stranger, having a large number of Syro-Malabar Catholics in his congregation at St Joseph’s. Last month, the Syro-Malabar Bishop, the Rt Revd Mar Joseph Srampickal visited St Joseph’s to lead a Lenten retreat and celebrate Mass in the Syro-Malabar Rite to a packed church.
