New Priest for the St Patrick’s Mission Sunday Mass Rota!

On Divine Mercy Sunday (Low Sunday), Fr Darren Jones became the latest priest to join the rota of celebrants of Sunday Mass at St Patrick’s Mission Church in Bradford.

St Patrick’s is a Mission and no longer a parish, and so was designated by the Bishop as the home of the Latin Mass in the Diocese of Leeds. Mass is at 1pm every Sunday followed by Confessions, and between fifty and eighty lay faithful, including several of Bradford University’s local student population and many families of all ages and ethnic backgrounds, travel there from across the Diocese.

Fr Darren will now celebrate Mass every sixth Sunday, joining Fr Frantisek Chloupek CFR (who is a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal, based at St Patrick’s Mission), and Frs Kevan Driver, Paul Grogan, Michael Hall, Tim Wiley and Simon Winn. There are at least seven other priests in the Diocese who may celebrate the vetus ordo privately, but owing to commitments in their own parishes are not scheduled on the St Patrick’s Sunday rota.

After Mass, Fr Darren heard Confessions and also chatted to Mass-goers before walking back to his own parish; in his clerical dress, making a confident and public statement of witness to his Catholic priesthood in the same way as the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and the local Muslim Imams do to proclaim their faith.

Fr Darren Jones is Parish Priest of the nearby Bradford Parish of St Blaise, which serves the pastoral area of West Bradford: Our Lady of Lourdes and St William in Girlington, St Matthew in Allerton and Sacred Heart, Thornton. Along with parishioners, he has worked hard to ensure both St William’s and St Matthew’s churches are filled with the Beauty of Holiness – and Mass attendance has risen accordingly! During Holy Week, a Relic of the True Cross was venerated, a parishioner who is a member of Bradford Catholic Youth Choir enhanced the Liturgies with sung responses, and congregations of more than 400 lay faithful attended the (novus ordo) Masses this Easter.

Fr Darren and parishioners at the Parish of St Blaise in Bradford wish a very happy and blessed Easter to all!
