The Leeds Sports awards are an annual event that celebrates achievement of teams and individuals also recognising people who, coach, administer and volunteer to make activities and sport happen in Leeds. The awards have been running for 23 years and are run by the Sport Leeds Committee.
Peter McQuillen-Strong, the executive Head Teacher of two Catholic primary schools in Leeds won the 2025 Schools Achievement of the Year award under the umbrella of ‘Beacons of The City’, School Achievement of the Year. He had been nominated by people working for Leeds City Council and was fortunate to be shortlisted and then awarded top prize.
The awards evening took place at the Carriageworks in Leeds and was hosted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Dan Cohen, Tania Arnold, former sports journalist with BBC Look North, and Jamie Jones-Buchanan, the Chief Executive of Leeds Rhinos. Peter is Executive Head of Holy Family school in Armley and St Philip’s at Middleton in Leeds, where he has led significant improvements in PE and school sport. Both schools regularly win City-level honours in football, cross country, tag rugby and orienteering. As secretary for both Leeds School Sports Association and Leeds Schools Football Association, he coordinates all citywide football competitions, handles logistics and over sees event management. His contributions have strengthened school sport across Leeds, improved pupil outcomes and positively impacted many young lives.
