An Old Tradition Revived at St Clare’s, Bradford

On the morning, of Thursday 23 January pupils at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Fagley, received some very special visitors. The three kings, led by the light of the star and an angel led their Parish Priest, Fr Paul Redmond, into each classroom for the traditional ‘Chalking the Doors’ ritual.

The centuries old tradition involves blessing the room with Holy Water and writing the inscription 20*C+M+B 20.

The letters represent the initials for the Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar who came to visit Jesus in His first home.

The * represents the star that led them to the home of Jesus and the + represents the sign of the cross and the blessing of God. The ’20’ at the beginning and end of the inscription mark the year. Taken together, this inscription is a request for Christ to bless the classroom and to remain with us throughout the coming year.
