CANCELLED: Batley Torchlight Procession 2017
2nd October 2017
This notice is to inform you that, with great reluctance, it has been necessary to take the decision to cancel the Batley Torchlight Procession this year.
St Mary’s Church in Batley has been undergoing extensive structural renovation works and this required the erection of scaffolding throughout the entire interior of the church. In planning the work it was anticipated that the scaffolding would be removed and the renovations completed well before the procession was due to take place on Monday 2nd October.
Regrettably though, the work will not now be completed before the planned date of the procession. The Parish Priest, Fr Eamonn Hegarty, discussed the situation with Bishop Marcus and it was agreed that in the interests of safety at such a large public event, it would be prudent to cancel the procession this year.
The decision will be disappointing to many of the pilgrims who regularly attend this wonderful public witness of our Catholic faith but it is hoped they will understand that the safety of all those who attend needs to be paramount. The organisers wished to give as much notice as possible of the need to cancel this year’s event. Be assured though that the annual Batley Torchlight Procession will, God willing, resume again in 2018.
