The Catholic Life of Charles Waterton of Wakefield

A well-attended display and talk on the Catholic Life of Charles Waterton took place on Thursday 21 May in the parish centre at St. Austin’s, Wakefield. The event was part of Wakefield’s WallFest26 celebrations commemorating 200 years since the opening of the wall around Charles Waterton’s parkland in Walton – credited by David Attenborough as the world’s first nature reserve.  It also formed part of the celebrations leading up to the 200th anniversary of the opening of St. Austin’s itself in 1828 – a project in which Charles Waterton was closely involved.

Parishioners were joined by members of the Friends of Waterton’s Wall together with representatives of the Waterton family – David and Elizabeth Waterton-Anderson for an enjoyable evening including tea and cake. A copy of the talk is now available on YouTube https://youtu.be/EVupXLXAIt4.

A new book, written by parishioner Dominic Gilroy, featuring all the details contained within the talk – and much more – is available online from Amazon with all profits being donated to St. Austin’s Church Restoration Fund.
