Sunday 18 July is the Feast of the Dedication of Leeds Cathedral

It was a double celebration today at Leeds Cathedral. Not only was it the first Mass celebrated by Fr Christopher Butler after his Ordination to the priesthood yesterday, it was also the Feast of the Cathedral’s Consecration.

Fr Chris celebrated Mass, with Bishop Marcus in white choir, and the Dean, Canon Matthew Habron, preached the Homily.

Fr Chris and Deacons Michael Mkpadi and John Lythe were wearing the chasuble and dalmatics which had been worn at Bishop Cowgill’s dedication of the Cathedral to St Anne, the Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in a four-hour ceremony which took place on Friday 18 July 1924, twenty years after the Cathedral opened its doors to worshippers.

The Mass, like all Sunday Masses at the Cathedral, was livestreamed and the recording is available to view via our YouTube Channel, Leeds Cathedral Live.
