St Aidan’s SVP Annual Dinner

There was much mirth in Mirfield on Saturday afternoon, as older people from the area enjoyed the Annual St Aidan’s Parish SVP Dinner.

Each year, the parish, local charities, and businesses rally round in support – and this year was no exception.

The event was made possible with a generous donation from Mirfield Round Table and through retiring collections at St Aidan’s, with parishioners also helping with the preparations and with transport.

Mirfield’s Oxfam Shop donated two dozen extra wine glasses for the liquid refreshment; Grantham’s Bakery supplied bread rolls for free; and Haigh’s Farm Shop and Ramsden’s Butchers gave discounts on the food which Bev France from Crossley Fields Junior School prepared into her customary delicious feast, served in the School Hall at tables beautifully decorated as ever with ‘elegant and colourful’ floral centre-pieces created by Donna from the SVP at neighbouring St Paulinus Parish in Dewsbury.

In greeting the sixty-eight attendees with a vote of thanks from John Devine on behalf of St Aidan’s SVP, a moment was taken to remember fondly in prayer those guests from last year who had died – but also to welcome new faces attending for the first time.

Parish Priest Fr Patrick Mungovin was called upon to say grace and then the festivities began in earnest, culminating in musical entertainment provided by David Hinckley and Kathy Ryan.
