The Diocese of Leeds is always looking out for ways to improve communication with ALL our website users in the diverse homes, schools and parishes of our Diocesan Family – and beyond – so we are delighted to announce that our diocesan websites will be even more accessible for parishioners whose first language is not English, as well as for those who are partially sighted or neuro-diverse.
During Dyslexia Awareness Week (2 to 8 October 2024), the ReciteMe Assistive Toolbar used by many charities across the UK and beyond will be embedded on our website with a range of accessible features.
These facilities can, of course, be searched for and downloaded individually and separately via various browser applications – but ReciteMe has brought them all together, in their most up to date form, into a single toolbar.
Each month, this diocesan website receives between 10,000 and 20,000 visits, mainly to our News Pages. More than 40 languages are spoken in our Diocese and not all our website visitors speak English as a first language. If you are visually impaired, dyslexic or on the neuro-diverse spectrum, or have physical or learning disabilities, or other special or additional needs, the ReciteMe Toolbar will enable you to customise your digital experience in a way that best suits your own individual needs.
Key features of ReciteMe are available in a single toolbar with a range of tools to read and understand content online:
- Translations – With at least 40 languages spoken within the Diocese, we can translate our website and any .pdf’s into around 150 languages (75 of which have the text to speech feature).
- Screen Reader converts text to speech, enabling people with visual impairments, neuro-diversity, or literacy issues to listen to the website instead.
- A Dictionary will be available – and updated to help explain any technical/religious terminology.
- Styling options and reading aids help people with visual impairments and/or neuro-diversities (e.g. magnifier, dictionary, ruler, screen mask and margins; changes to font size, typeface, spacing and colour)…
Approximately 13 million people in the UK have a disability which may prevent them from reading online content. Amongst those who are most susceptible to access barriers are people who struggle with decreased vision, learning difficulties, literacy, language/linguistic problems, attention disorders and physical disabilities. ReciteMe assistive technology provides support for all of these. This will make our website even more inclusive and a place where people can access information on any of our pages – including .pdfs and posters embedded on those pages.
For more information on the Recite Me toolbar visit: reciteme.com.
The Toolbar will be available on all sites and pages under our two diocesan domain names: dioceseofleeds.org.uk and dioceseofleedsmusic.org.uk
It couldn’t be easier to use – simply click on the ‘ReciteMe’ button at the top right of screen and the Toolbar will appear. Hover over each icon to find the one you need, and then select!
