Fr John Carter RIP

Fr Carter was born on 18 July 1948. As a boy he studied at the junior seminary at St Hugh’s College, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire. He later trained for the priesthood at the English College, Lisbon and then at the Pontifical Beda College in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on 23 June 1979 at the Church of St Pius X at Grimsby in Lincolnshire.

Between 1979 and 1990 Fr Carter served as Assistant Priest in several parishes across the Diocese of Leeds: Ss Peter & Paul, Sandal (1979-83); St Joseph, Keighley (1983-84); St Paul, Alwoodley, Leeds (1984-89); and St Joseph, Brighouse (1989-90).

In 1990 Fr Carter was appointed Parish Priest of St Peter’s, Leeds Road, Bradford. In 1995 he returned to Brighouse, as parish Priest of St Joseph’s. After ten years in Brighouse, he moved to Leeds to become the Parish Priest of St Patrick’s, Torre Road.

Ill health obliged Fr Carter to retire from parochial office in 2011 and for the next fourteen years he lived at Shadwell in North Leeds. His priestly ministry continued however, as he became a great support to the clergy of St John Mary Vianney Parish and often celebrated Mass for the congregations at the Church of the Immaculate Heart, Moortown and at St Paul’s, Alwoodley.

After a short illness Fr Carter died, aged seventy-seven, at St James’s Hospital, Leeds on Friday 1 August.

May he rest in peace.
