Cardinal’s Corpus Christi Mass on BBC R4: first live broadcast of Mass since Lock-down

Cardinal Vincent Nichols will celebrate Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi LIVE from Westminster Cathedral on Sunday 14 June 2020 at 08.10 hrs on BBC Radio 4’s flagship religious worship programme, Sunday Worship.
For Catholics unable to get to church, and especially those with no online access, this live celebration of Mass will be of the greatest importance, especially on this feast celebrating the Real Presence of the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
This will be the first live radio outside broadcast of a church service in the UK, since the lock-down. Listeners will be able to worship in spirit with the Cardinal and make a Spiritual Communion.
Whilst social-distancing rules still prevent churches from opening, this Mass will take place behind closed doors and with no congregation present, apart from concelebrant Fr Daniel Humphreys and a single reader – all physically-distanced.

Usually, there should be no pre-recorded music played into any Catholic Liturgy, however, the Cardinal has given the BBC special permission for music recordings on CD to be played into this Mass from a BBC studio.

The Gloria, Sanctus and Benedictus will be sung to a setting Ave Regina Caelorum by Victoria, recorded in 2004 by the Choir of Westminster Cathedral. The communion anthem – Byrd’s Ave Verum Corpus – will again be a recording from the Westminster Cathedral Choir’s extensive discography.

The readings for the day are Deuteronomy 8:2-3,14-16 and John 6:51-58.
