Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Kirkstall has two teams qualified into the 2023 Leeds Primary Debating Championships.
One of three heats across the city was hosted by Sacred Heart with two of their three teams qualifying for the last eight in the final at Leeds Civic hall on 29 June. Last year, the school was runner up and is now hoping to go one better in 2023!
This partly inspired the Year 5 trip to the Houses of Parliament in April to have a debating workshop, tour of Parliament and a visit from their local MP, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
The Year 5 children have been inspired to restructure their School Council into a Pupil Parliament and are now looking at ways to extend the pupils’ voice across the St Gregory the Great Catholic Academy Trust by getting pupil representation in a Trust-wide Pupil Parliament to encourage the young Catholic leaders of tomorrow.
