A Present for a Yorkshire Cardinal!

Bishop Marcus has now returned from the Synod in Rome. Whilst there, he was able to meet with Cardinal Arthur Roche to give him the special present he had commissioned shortly after the announcement last year that Archbishop Roche was to be made a Cardinal.

The icon of St John Fisher is the work of Martin Earle (https://martinearle.com/) and the scripture quotation Bishop Marcus asked to be included in the open Gospel Book held by the Saint is from Luke 5:4 and includes Cardinal Roche’s episcopal motto: Duc in altum (‘Put out into the deep’).

The icon writer had to finish other commissions first, so the Bishop took the opportunity of being in Rome for the Synod to make the presentation to a delighted Cardinal Roche.

St John Fisher is the first of the three Cardinals who have born in Yorkshire. Fisher was born in Beverley, the second Yorkshire Cardinal was Arthur Hinsley (born in Carlton, near Selby) and Cardinal Roche is from Batley Carr.

Dr James Hagerty KSG’s excellent article about all three Yorkshire Cardinals was serialised in the Universe Catholic Weekly and is also available to read on this website: The Yorkshire Cardinals – Diocese of Leeds
