Preparing and leading the Prayer of the Faithful is an important ministry in the life of the parish community. Depending on the circumstances, it may be performed by a Deacon, a Reader, or by others chosen for the role.

The Prayer of the Faithful gathers the many prayers of the community into one: it should include the present needs of the community, and of the wider Church and the World.

In preparation it’s helpful to reflect on the readings being used in that day’s liturgy – the First (and Second) Reading, the Psalm, the Gospel, and the prayers being used.

It’s also good to order the Intentions as follows:

      • for the needs of the Church
      • for public authorities and the salvation of the whole world
      • for those burdened by any kind of difficulty
      • for the local community
      • for the sick and suffering
      • for those who have died (either recently or whose anniversaries we recall)

Taking time to prepare the Intentions prayerfully is important – as are the practicalities of reading clearly and slowly and allowing time for the congregation to pray silently for each Intention.

A guide for preparing the Prayer of the Faithful has been produced for use in the diocese, and can be reproduced freely.
