Governor Development

When they are appointed all governors must not only bring skills to the governing body that they are willing to use for the benefit of the diocese and its schools but also ensure that they give time to learning about the educational aspects of schools through ongoing governor development. The world of education changes very quickly, from new curriculum planning, new Ofsted frameworks to funding and safeguarding responsibilities. Governors in Catholic schools must also ensure they understand the mission of Catholic education, the inspection of Catholic schools and above all how to ensure  the ethos of a Catholic school pervades all the school does and makes it distinctive from other forms of education in working with the families and parishes in its area.

To support governors with this requirement, every year the diocese publishes a programme of governor development and every governor is expected to attend at least one event a year. Often further sessions are also made available as new aspects of education are launched.
