Prosecution (CROWN PROSECUTION SERVICE)

Prosecution is the process of taking a criminal case to court to bring an offender to justice. In England and Wales the main prosecuting body is the Crown Prosecution Service. It is independent from the government and the police. Its lawyers make decisions about whether to prosecute a case, and what criminal charge is appropriate.

The CPS is regulated by Her Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate.
