If a person is found guilty or pleads guilty at court, one possible outcome is a prison sentence. In the UK the main agency is HM Prison Service. This website says its aim is to help prisoners “lead law-abiding and useful lives, both while they are in prison and after they are released”.
Prisons are regularly inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons which publishes detailed reports on standards in prisons nationwide.
A number of local charities exist to support prisoners, such as Jigsaw Visitors Centre, which helps family visitors.
