Cathedral Building Fund

Major restoration works were completed at the Cathedral in 2005/06. This means we have a beautiful building that is generally in a good state of repair. However, as time goes on, caring for our Cathedral means keeping on top of the repair works that do become necessary. Whilst parishioners of the Cathedral give generously, at present the level of donations does not cover the costs of the building works required. We are therefore appealing for donations specifically to help us undertake these building works.

As a Listed Building, every 5 years we must undergo a Quinquennial Inspection. This helps us identify problems early and keep our beautiful Cathedral in good shape, and prevent much bigger expenses by attending to problems at the right time.

In October 2020 we launched the “Caring for Our Cathedral Today and Tomorrow” Building Fund Appeal. The initial target was to raise £140,000 to complete a list of works identified from the QI report including repairs to the Baptismal Font, South Steps, West Rood Crucifix, Sacred Heart Chapel and boundary walls. These works are now complete. We have also repainted the ambulatory, refurbished the WC facilities and completed some electrical works. Shortly, all the lights in the Cathedral will have been converted to LED’s.  Thanks to the generosity of donors and grant funders we have now exceeded that target. Photographs showing a selection of key works completed can be seen on the gallery above.

Our next focus is the Cathedral Sound System:  We have received lots of feedback about the poor quality of the sound in the Cathedral and we know that this is a major issue for many people who visit and worship at the Cathedral. We have done lots of research to find a system that we believe will improve the quality of the sound.  We already have grant funding from the Albert Gubay Charitable foundation of £14,411 towards the new installation, but to make this a reality we need to raise a further £49,000.  We appeal to your generosity! Full details of how to give are available on the flyers or you can give on the dedicated JustGiving page here. With very grateful thanks for giving this your consideration.
