National Lottery Heritage Fund Grant

Leeds Cathedral Awarded a grant of almost £100k from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to share history and heritage in the heart of the city.

The Diocese of Leeds has received a grant of £99,944 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for Leeds Cathedral to expand its welcome and provisions for visitors of all faiths and none. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, Leeds Cathedral’s ‘Heritage for All’ project will celebrate the 2024 centenary of the Cathedral’s consecration by welcoming all to share its history, heritage, and culture at the heart of the City of Leeds

A lot of the activity and changes around the Cathedral in 2023 and 2024 are thanks to the NLHF grant.   For example, the grant has helped to fund:

  • The repairs to the South Steps (see before and after below)
  • The new digital information screens
  • A study of how to improve access and toilet facilities at the Cathedral – on display in the Cathedral from 28 August 2024 and followed by a presentation by the Cathedral Architect on 22 September 2024.  This can be viewed here.
  • Training for volunteers including an online resources and advanced in person training.
  • Training of Cathedral Guides
  • The Heritage Interpretation panels at various key points around the Cathedral.

Below is a cloud map created from words written by those who visited the Cathedral during Light Night Leeds 2023.
