Environment and Conservation

New Hinsley Hall General Manager Iain Lindsay and staff are happy to announce progress in their ongoing campaign to make facilities at the Diocese of Leeds Pastoral and Conference Centre as sustainable as possible.

Hinsley Hall is set in several acres of green and leafy parkland between Headingley and Hyde Park. A regular ‘bus service stops just a few steps from the gate, and the site is only a fifteen minute walk from Burley Park Railway Station.

On arrival, visitors can now see the latest news on the display board in Reception and this now includes other sustainability measures brought about with the help of the Diocesan Property Office.

Some of the ‘quick wins’ have been very cost-effective to bring about – such as the new shower-heads fitted in all 50 ensuite rooms at a total cost of around £500 – but which reduce hot water consumption by 40%! The hot water boilers which are being replaced this Autumn are also 24% more energy efficient.

The following list summarises the sustainability measures taken across both hospitality accommodation and Curia offices:

For many years, the Diocese of Leeds has subscribed to Interdiocesan Fuel Management (IFM) with 100% of our Electricity from renewable sources and Green Gas (currently at 71%). Other sustainability measures for employees, such as home and flexible working policies that help cut down on pollution from slow commutes, have also been in place since 2018.

In addition to their work at Hinsley Hall, the Property Office has been undertaking a number of energy saving projects in parish halls, many of them generously supported by Awards for All Grants.

If YOUR parish, school or charity is coming up with ideas and initiatives – big or small – to become more sustainable, PLEASE let us know by emailing environment@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or communications@dioceseofleeds.org.uk so your stories and images can inspire others across the Diocese of Leeds and beyond. All contributions will be published on this website and may also be of interest to local and Catholic press and media!
