The Diocese of Leeds is a charity, which exists to advance four Charitable Purposes.  Plus Charity details…?

THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE CATHOLIC RELIGION

We effect this through being seen and heard as Catholics in our own homes, schools, and parishes, throughout our diocese and beyond.

  • Through charitable acts of compassion and mercy to friend and stranger of all faiths and none.
  • Through attending Mass, supporting the work of our clergy, and becoming active and giving members of our own parish community.
  • Through proclaiming our faith abroad on our diocesan pilgrimages: to Walsingham, to Lourdes and local diocesan events celebrating our heritage, such as the Batley Torchlight Procession.

THE PROMOTION OF CATHOLIC TEACHING

We promote Catholic teaching not only for children in our Catholic schools, but by example in our daily life at home and work  – supported by the Diocesan Family Life Ministry’s parenting courses and through parish catechesis.

THE PROVISION AND CARE OF PRIESTS

Amongst our active clergy, we have 124? Priests and 24? Permanent deacons.  The work of our active clergy – particularly our 77 parish priests – is to exercise pastoral and sacramental care for the parish communities and also to fulfil the aims of the charity by promoting the mission.

2017/18 Diocesan Statistics:  2214 baptisms, 2291 First Holy Communions, 1226 Confirmations, 363 marriages, 1662 funerals; approx. 28,000 attend Mass

We currently have seven seminarians in training for the sacred priesthood and six for the permanent diaconate.   Three candidates have entered seminary during 2018.

Having given a lifetime of active ministry, the diocese makes provision for its retired clergy to live independently, if they are able to do so – and if they are not, in residential care homes, such as Mount St Joseph’s where they are cared for by the Little Sisters of the Poor.
