THE WORD on the street is…we’ve gone indoors and online!

The Diocese of Leeds Year of the Word team, Deacon Henry Longbottom and Dr Gregory Stacey, have adapted to the current ‘physical distancing’ requirements with even more Bible-based activities.

Many of the Year of the Word events have had to be postponed, but those which were already online are unaffected – and, as if to emphasise how the Holy Scriptures are for all times, seasons and reasons, the team has developed new features, interactive activities, and innovations which may be safely undertaken from home, using your own Bible, or via the Internet.

Appreciations are flooding in for Deacon Henry’s inspirational Stay Safe Homilies from his church, home and garden at St John Henry Newman Parish. These may be viewed on the Diocese of Leeds – Year of the Word You Tube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQkJXV2I_tfKN8mprT5SNnA

Written in response to the Coronavirus pandemic by Dr Gregory Stacey (Diocese of Leeds Co-ordinator of Catechesis and Scripture Champion), Singing to the Lord in Exile is a superb series of biblical reflections with suggestions for musical accompaniment – many of them chosen from the repertoire of sacred music sung and played by our own Diocese of Leeds Choirs and organists: https://www.dioceseofleeds.org.uk/education/our-faith/year-of-the-word/coronavirus-stay-at-home-resources/

For a bit of interactive creativity, the team are also launching Window on the Word. Simply take a digital picture (or draw and scan one!) of whatever you can see through your window, inside your home, or from your garden, and email it to the team – captioned with the Chapter and Verse of whatever lines from Scripture the image might even remotely put you in mind of.  Here is one example: rosebuds, clematis and the flowering cherry, taken from the doorway:

Matthew 6:28-29 Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these.

These, and all the Year of the Word resources may be accessed via the special page of the diocesan website devoted to this initiative: https://www.dioceseofleeds.org.uk/education/our-faith/year-of-the-word/ which is where audio recordings of the distinguished and lively speakers from the Year of the Word Lecture Series and also the popular podcasts The Story of the Word in 12 Objects from the Diocese of Leeds are archived, awaiting the time when it is safe for them to continue.
