The Good Shepherd Celebration 2024

Tuesday 21 May 2024 saw once again a great gathering in Leeds Cathedral of pupils, students and their teachers from right across the Diocese for the Good Shepherd Celebration.

Throughout each Season of Lent, the pupils and students raise funds through a variety of ingenious and often rather ‘whacky’ activities for Catholic Care – Caritas Leeds which they then present to Bishop Marcus.

This year there were some additions to the ever-growing list of fundraising activities including: sales of everything from toast to pre-loved books; Bring a Cuddly Toy to School Day; Patron Saint’s Feast Dress Down Day; Bend the Rules Day; Culture Day; and the teachers’ particular favourite, The Sponsored Silence!

This was a special year for the celebration recognising Catholic Care’s 160th Anniversary from its humble beginnings in 1863.  The presenting school this year was St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Hunslet, Leeds and pupils proclaimed a number of readings emphasising the virtues of Jesus the Good Shepherd.  Their singing was beautiful as was that of the visiting singers from the Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music, Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

The Liturgy was led by St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Hunslet.

St Joseph’s School Choir was joined by singers from Vanderbilt University, USA. The Choir was directed by Amy Howe and Tom Leech was the organist.

Carol Hill, Director of Catholic Care-Caritas Leeds, said, ‘It’s lovely to hear the passion and enthusiasm the young people have for this great cause and the ways in which they raise the funds.’

As groups left the Cathedral to return to school there were many happy faces and comments about how much everyone had enjoyed the celebration!

Congratulations to all at Catholic Care celebrating 160 Years of loving care and support for those in our Diocese who need it most – and to all our schools taking part in the fundraising!
