Sunday 21 May is World Communications Day!

It is our mission as Catholics to engage with current issues and bring the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ to the world. On this Sunday 21 May, the Catholic Church’s 57th World Day of Social Communication, please pray for all communicators, particularly for those who are responsible for communicating on behalf of the Catholic Church in this country, including our friends at the Universe Catholic Weekly, which from this weekend (Friday 19 May 2023) will be back in print as well as online.

The theme which the Holy Father has chosen for this World Communications Sunday is ‘Speaking with the Heart: the Truth in Love’. Pope Francis has said: ‘The call to speak with the heart, radically challenges the times in which we are living, which are so inclined towards indifference and indignation, at times even on the basis of disinformation which falsifies and exploits the truth.’ This theme is taken from St Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 4:13-32 is particularly relevant today, and so is worth reading in context as it explains that only by speaking truth in love, will we become ‘fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself. Then we shall not be children any longer, or tossed one way and another and carried along by every wind of doctrine, at the mercy of all the tricks men play and their cleverness in practising deceit. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall grow in all ways into Christ, who is the head by whom the whole body is fitted and joined together, every joint adding its own strength, for each separate part to work according to its function. So the body grows until it has built itself up, in love. The new life in Christ.’
