St Joseph’s Castleford UCM: stepping out for CAFOD!

Members of St Joseph’s Union of Catholic Mothers (UCM) have been stepping out together in prayer to raise funds for CAFOD’s Lenten Appeal – and Carol Sidebottom, Secretary of St Joseph’s UCM, has contacted communications@dioceseofleeds.org.uk with news of this Lenten initiative from one of our newest and most active UCM groups in the Diocese …

With Parish Priest Fr John Aveyard’s blessing and encouragement, this is the third year that UCM members have taken up the challenge of CAFOD’s Big Lent Walk, inviting parishioners and friends to join them on Tuesday mornings throughout Lent to attend Mass, walking together in the nearby Valley Gardens and afterwards sharing a welcome cuppa and toasted teacake in the Parish Hall.

‘Down by the Valley Gardens’!

Their Lenten Tuesday mornings have brought them together in prayer and friendship, to witness God’s creation during this Year of St Francis of Assisi, as week by week they have seen the spring bulbs bloom in the morning sun. Thanks be to God that they have been blessed with bright sunny mornings!

The sun was shining too when they welcomed Angela Powell, CAFOD’s Leeds and Hallamshire Community and Participation Co-ordinator to walk with them. Angela’s visit came with a message of thanks for Fr John and the parishioners of St Joseph’s who, over the years, have generously supported the work of CAFOD, and also to share a Lenten message from CAFOD’s Director, Christine Allen:

‘This Lent, as we reflect,  I wanted to take a moment to share why this season of Lent matters for families facing hunger.  Around the world, floods and drought are making it increasingly difficult for families to grow enough food.   This Lent your Family Fast Day offerings will help more families to put food on the table and build resilience against our changing climate.  Your compassion and prayers are always valued.’

Angela Powell from CAFOD & Kathryn Waugh of St Joseph’s UCM

Kathryn Waugh, President of St Joseph’s UCM, said: ‘Our UCM Lenten Walks would not be possible without Fr John’s support and the generous sponsorship of family, friends and parishioners for which we are truly grateful!’
