A month after the Hospice marked the 45th anniversary of its opening by Bishop Wheeler, patients and families, staff, supporters and the Sisters of the Cross and Passion welcomed Bishop Marcus to St Gemma’s Hospice to celebrate Mass for the Feast of St Gemma (which is kept by Passionists on 16 May).
Gemma Galgani (1878-1903) lost most of her family to tuberculosis, from which she herself was to die aged only 25. She was canonised in May 1940 and is venerated as a mystic who bore the stigmata wounds of Christ which she said gave her ‘thoughts of sorrow, love, fear, hope and comfort.’
