Sunday, 7 July was the Leeds 10k race when fifty five runners took part to raise money for Catholic Care’s Young Carers Project. Months of training and hard work resulted in all fifty five of them completing the full route in the summer sunshine.
The Young Carers Team were at the starting line offering water, encouragement and of course gratitude to all of those who came out to support them. The charity’s own Young Carers worker Graham Robertson and his family were runners, along with Catholic Care’s Schools Team’s Beki Edwards, whose three year old daughter was on the finish line to congratulate her mum.
The staff team from Mount St Mary’s came out in force, keen to back the project that supports young people in their school. The St Mary’s Menston team arrived in style, their fancy dress outfits adding colour to the event. St Joseph’s, Pudsey, St Joseph’s, Hunslet, St Patrick’s, Birstall and St Theresa’s, Crossgates were also represented. Thank you to all!
There are more than 800,000 young carers across the country. These young carers are forced to grow up early and miss out on the same opportunities as other children because they care for family members who are disabled or chronically ill, or for adults who have addiction problems.
Catholic Care’s Young Carers Project supports children and young people aged 5-17 by delivering a range of social and leisure opportunities. The Project also offers one to one mentoring support to the young people and family support to parents and carers. Through services young carers can come together, develop friendships and enjoy some respite in an informal, non-judgemental atmosphere. One young carer said ‘ I can really be myself at Young Carers, it makes me feel happy and relaxed.’
Director of Catholic Care, Carol Hill, said, ‘This year we are taking our senior group on a residential trip where they will enjoy a full range of outdoor activities, home cooked food and campfire suppers. Our junior Young Carers are looking forward to some exciting summer trips out as well. With the contributions from our runners in the Leeds 10k, we can offer more activities and support, thank you again!’
