On 22 June 2026 a former priest of the Diocese of Leeds died at home in Sacramento, California. Fr Brendan McKeeefry was born in County Derry, Ireland on St Patrick’s Day, 1944. He studied for the priesthood at All Hallows College, Dublin and was ordained for the Leeds diocese on 18 June1967 by Bishop John J Scanlon, Bishop of Honolulu.
Fr McKeefry served in parishes in Sheffield, including St Marie’s Cathedral, and at St Joseph’s, Brighouse in the years between 1967 and 1979, when he transferred to the Diocese of Sacramento in the USA, thereafter serving in a number of parishes in northern California. He retired in 2012 and since then had lived at the Priest Retirement Centre in Citrus Heights and often serving military families at the National Cemetery at Dixon.
Fr McKeefry’s funeral will take place at St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Sacramento at the beginning of July.
