Following a decree issued by Bishop Marcus, on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, Thursday 29 June, the parishes of St Mary, Batley, and St Patrick, Birstall were formally amalgamated to create a new parish dedicated to St Mary and St Patrick, with Fr Eamonn Hegarty as Parish Priest.
The parish includes the Grade II Listed Church of St Mary in Batley, built in 1870 and St Patrick’s, Birstall, which opened exactly 100 years later in 1970.
There are also Catholic primary schools in both towns (St Mary’s in Batley and St Patrick’s in Birstall) which are now academies and part of the Blessed Peter Snow Catholic Academy Trust.
