Mr Peter Neafsey RIP

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Peter Neafsey, the former Director of Schools for the Diocese of Leeds. Peter was the first holder of the post and was appointed by Bishop David Konstant in 1986. He came to Leeds after ten years as Chief Education Officer for the Knowsley local authority on Merseyside. During his time with the diocese Peter oversaw the implementation of many changes in the structure and content of education in the primary and secondary sectors, such as the Local Management of Schools (LMS), the National Curriculum and the advent of OFSTED inspections. He promoted the interests of Catholic education with the local education authorities, working through the Diocesan Schools Commission at local level and the Catholic Education Service nationally. His time with the diocese also saw the large-scale reorganisation of Catholic schools in Leeds and Bradford during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Peter retired in August 1998. He and his wife Barbara, who predeceased him, were long-standing parishioners of St Robert’s, Harrogate and Peter’s funeral will take place at the church on Friday 13 May at 12.00 noon.

Please pray for the repose of Peter’s soul and remember his family and friends in your prayers at this time.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen
