Leeds in Green Honours St Patrick

Thousands of people turned out to enjoy the St Patrick’s Day parade through Leeds city centre on Sunday 16 March. The parade included floats showcasing dancers, bands and community groups, and was followed by live music in Millennium Square.

The parade started in Millennium Square at 11:00am and travelled along Great George Street before heading down Park Row and on to Boar Lane, returning via Vicar Lane and The Headrow. A number of roads in the city centre were closed on a rolling basis between 10:00am and 1:00pm to allow the parade to pass through.

At the head of the parade were the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Abigail Marshall Katung, together with Canon Eugene McGillycuddy and Canon John Nunan, two of our retired priests who first came to the Leeds diocese from Ireland more than fifty years ago, following their ordination to the priesthood in the early 1970s.

The event was supported by Leeds City Council and the Government of Ireland’s Emigrant Support Programme. It was also a fundraiser for St Gemma’s Hospice and its provision of end-of-life care to the people of Leeds.
