Birstall’s St Patrick’s Catholic Primary Academy in the Blessed Peter Snow Catholic Academy Trust led the music and worship for a special Jubilee-Year-themed Good Shepherd Celebration at Leeds Cathedral.
Schools across the Diocese of Leeds fund-raise annually for our diocesan charity Catholic Care-Caritas Leeds. Before the cheques were presented, Bishop Marcus thanked the outgoing Catholic Care Director, Carol Hill and welcomed her successor, Matt Lomas.
During the presentations, pupils from St Patrick’s School gave thoughtful and well-structured reflections, readings and prayers as ‘Pilgrims of Hope’: on forgiveness and reconciliation, care for all creation, and the importance of encountering God through prayer and pilgrimage. Each reflection was followed by an appropriate hymn or music continuing the theme, including the Hail Mary which was both sung and signed with British Sign Language.
The significance and symbolism of the Jubilee Year and importance of putting faith into action to support the marginalised and those in the greatest need through charities such as Catholic Care (which is now also Caritas Leeds) was particularly highlighted by the presence of a work of art, commissioned by CAFOD and adopted by the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales as the official Jubilee Icon, which is on tour across England and Wales and had been brought to the Cathedral specially for the event.
