Funeral & Nine Days of Mourning the Death of Pope Francis

The Holy See has announced that the Funeral Mass for the late Holy Father Pope Francis will take place on Saturday, 26 April at 9.00am (UK time). The Mass will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio, marking the beginning of the Novendiales, or nine days of mourning and Masses for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis.

During that period of mourning, Bishop Marcus will celebrate a Solemn Requiem Mass at Leeds Cathedral on Tuesday 29 April at 5.30pm. In addition to priests, deacons, religious and lay faithful of the Diocese of Leeds, attending this Mass will be  representatives from other Christian denominations and other religious faiths.  Civic guests, include the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Abigail Marshall Katung and, representing His Majesty the King, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Helen Thomson.

The Mass will be livestreamed via this link.

During the days of the Novendiales (commencing Saturday 26 April and ending on Sunday 4 May), Masses for the Dead may be offered in parishes for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis on Wednesday 30 April, Thursday 1 May, Friday 2 May and on the morning of Saturday 3 May.

In addition to the celebration of Mass, and where it is possible, the Bishop encourages all our parish and religious communities to pray the Office of the Dead from the Liturgy of the Hours for the repose of the soul of the Holy Father. Especially in our schools, Recitation of the Holy Rosary and tradition of praying the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be to the Father, followed by the prayer ‘Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord…’ is encouraged for the repose of the soul of the deceased Pope.
