SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Days: St Rita
DESCRIPTION:St Rita of Cascia (1381-1457) became an Augustinian nun after being widowed. She had previously endured 18 years of marriage to a rich\, but quick-tempered and violent husband. She prayed constantly for her husband to experience a change of heart – and he did. When he was later killed in a ‘vendetta’ or ‘honour-feud’\, she prevented her sons from seeking revenge. St Rita is now a Patron Saint of all people suffering spousal abuse and family feuds\, so is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’. \nReporting Safeguarding Concerns: If you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention call emergency services on 999. Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding can be contacted in confidence by email via Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. Anyone who brings concerns or allegations to the notice of the Church will be responded to sensitively\, respectfully and seriously. All concerns and allegations will be addressed using the Church’s national procedures and in a timely manner. The Catholic Safeguarding Standard Agency (CSSA) can also be contacted on 0207 901 1920 or via email at admin@catholicsafeguarding.org.uk \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Rita of Cascia: pray for us! \n

SUMMARY:Care for Creation! Local screenings of 'The People's Emergency Briefing'
DESCRIPTION:A message from our environmental collaborators at Climate Action Leeds! \nThe UK faces a growing climate and nature emergency. Yet most people have never been fully briefed on what it means for our lives\, our economy and our future. So much of what we do hear is either outdated or misinformed – and sometimes even deliberate disinformation is spread! A new film from the National Emergency Briefing sets out the risks facing our nation – and the credible\, positive responses available – in a clear and accessible account designed for screenings in communities across the UK. \nOne of several local screenings of The People’s Emergency Briefing film will be at Headingley Enterprise and Arts Centre (HEART) on 20 May which has been organised by Zero Carbon Headingley – here’s the link to book: Peoples Emergency Briefing Film Tickets\, Wednesday 20 May  •  7 PM – 9:15 PM | Eventbrite \nThe National Emergency Briefing (NEB) has also produced a Screening Map: https://www.nebriefing.org/screening-map – and there will be more screenings being registered across our region!

SUMMARY:National Day of Prayer for Survivors of Abuse
DESCRIPTION:The National Day of Prayer for Survivors of Abuse takes place every year on the fifth Tuesday of Easter when we remember in prayer ALL people who have suffered abuse of any kind – especially that which has been church-related abuse – and especially those victims and survivors from our own Diocese of Leeds and our sister Dioceses of Middlesbrough and Hallam. \nThe Catholic Church Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has produced information and resources to guide our prayers:\nhttps://www.cbcew.org.uk/national-day-of-prayer-for-survivors-of-abuse-2026/ \nBishop Marcus installed the icon of St Raphael in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Leeds Cathedral as a memorial and a focus of prayer for victims and survivors of abuse and their families. Although such memorials have in some places in the world been erected outside in the grounds of churches\, as far as we know\, this was the first memorial of its kind erected within a Catholic Cathedral and we hope it  is a place where victims and survivors of abuse themselves will find healing and peace. \nThe Bishop’s reason for commissioning the image of St Raphael the Archangel was because of his biblical association with the divine gift of healing and restoration\, making him another of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’ – and a worthy Icon to be installed into Leeds Cathedral to encourage prayer for the healing of\, and justice for\, all those who have suffered from physical or sexual abuse as children or vulnerable adults. \n \nSt Raphael: pray for us \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business! \nIf any any child or adult is at risk of immediate harm\, call 999.\nThe Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding Team is available Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. Direct any concerns via email to: Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. Anyone who brings concerns or allegations to the notice of the Church will be responded to sensitively\, respectfully and seriously. All concerns and allegations will be addressed using the Church’s national procedures and in a timely manner. The Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency (CSSA) can also be contacted on 0207 901 1920 or via email at admin@catholicsafeguarding.org.uk \nA copy of our current Safeguarding Communications Plan is also available on the Safeguarding website.

SUMMARY:Feast Day of Blessed Ceferino Giménez Malla: Patron of Gypsies\, Roma & Travellers
DESCRIPTION:On the Feast Day of the Patron of Gypsies\, Roma and Travellers\, we remember in our prayers all members of those communities in our Diocese. \nBlessed Ceferino Giménez Malla (1864 – 1936) was born in Spain to a Catholic Roma Gypsy family. \n\n\nDuring the Spanish Civil War\, Ceferino intervened on behalf of a priest who was being arrested – and was himself taken away and imprisoned with around 350 others in a monastery which the authorities had seized to use as a prison. \nIt is said that when asked if he was carrying a weapon\, Ceferino affirmed that he was and showed the soldiers his Rosary! Told that if he handed over his Rosary beads he would be freed\, Ceferino refused – and so it happened that on 9 August 1936\, Ceferino and others were driven to the cemetery where they would be shot and buried in a mass grave. Holding his Rosary\, Ceferino kept on praying and loudly shouting\, ‘Long live Christ the King!’ \n\n\nHe was beatified by Pope St John Paul II on May 4\, 1997. The Holy Father said that Ceferino ‘knew how to sow harmony and solidarity among his own\, also mediating conflicts that sometimes blur the relationship between non-Roma and Roma\, showing Christ’s love knows no boundaries of race or culture’. \nFind out more about Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller people in our region by visiting the website of the charity Leeds GATE: https://www.leedsgate.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Josephine Bakhita
DESCRIPTION:As the Patron Saint of all Victims and Survivors of Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery\, St Josephine Bakhita (Feast Day 8 February) was kidnapped from her home in Sudan aged just nine and sold into slavery. She is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’ – and this is a prayer for her intercession to help us combat these evils and to support and comfort all who have been trafficked\, enslaved or otherwise exploited: \nO God\, who led Saint Josephine Bakhita from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and a bride of Christ\, grant\, we pray\, that by her example we may show constant love for the Lord Jesus crucified\, remaining steadfast in charity and prompt to show compassion.\nAmen. \nFor more information on how the Catholic Church combats Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery\, visit the website of the Santa Marta Group – an alliance of police chiefs and bishops to bring system change to end human trafficking. \nIf someone is in immediate danger\, please call 999. For any other Trafficking and Safeguarding information or concerns in the Diocese of Leeds\, please contact Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding. \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Josephine Bakhita: pray for us!

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:On Holocaust Memorial Day\, we remember ALL who suffered persecution or lost their lives under the Nazis – especially the six million Jewish men\, women and children\, and further millions targeted by that regime for racial\, religious\, social or political reasons. \nIn our own Diocese\, two of our parishes are under the patronage of Saints who fell victim to the Holocaust: St Maximilan Kolbe and St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Some of the fiercest opposition to the Nazis came from German\, Austrian and Polish Catholic clergy and laity who strongly declared Catholicism and Nazism to be utterly incompatible (read more in an online article accessible via this link). \nThis year\, the Lord Mayor of Leeds will open the 2026 Civic Remembrance Event for Holocaust Memorial Day. This will include a keynote speech by Tracy Craggs from Holocaust Centre North. Tracy has been working with the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association for 18 years\, latterly as Head of Collections for its Holocaust Centre North based at the University of Huddersfield\, where she is responsible for working with survivors and their families in securing their wonderful collections for the future. She is also fortunate to have a dual role\, looking after the needs of survivors based in Yorkshire. \nThere will be a multimedia (photography\, video\, sound\, and spoken word) performance of Sight by artist Laura Fisher\, focusing on experiences by Holocaust survivor Iby Knill. The artist retraced Iby’s journey across the no man’s land between Czechoslovakia and Hungary in February 1942. This attempt to retrace Iby’s path of survival echoes a similar journey Iby’s son Chris Knill made to Auschwitz-Birkenau to understand the places that witnessed pivotal parts of his mother’s life. \nMusic will be performed by the United Hebrew Congregation choir with Rabbi Alby Chait MBE. The event will include a reading of the seven statements of commitments with candles lit by representatives of the different groups persecuted in the Holocaust\, by Nazi persecution and in the subsequent genocides which followed. A memorial prayer will be sung by Rabbi Anthony Gilbert to close the event. \nFree Tickets can be booked via the link below: \nHolocaust Memorial Day 2026: Bridging the Generations: What’s On: City Varieties Music Hall: Leeds Heritage Theatres \nLCC HMD 2026 Poster
