SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Monica
DESCRIPTION:St Monica is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’: she was a Christian\, married to an abusive pagan husband. One of her three children was St Augustine of Hippo: a great Saint and Doctor of the Church. St Monica prayed that her violent husband would repent before he died  – and he did! \nSt Monica is a Patron Saint of all victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse.  The Leeds charity which provides short-term accommodation for destitute female asylum seekers\, St Monica’s Housing\, is named after her. \nIf you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention call emergency services on 999. Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding can be contacted in confidence by email via Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. Anyone who brings concerns or allegations to the notice of the Church will be responded to sensitively\, respectfully and seriously. SUMMARY:Sustainability Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:St Fiacre (died c 670) \nBorn in Ireland\, St Fiacre became a monk and was known as a skilled herbalist (like the fictional ‘Brother Cadfael’!) – but as his fame spread\, he sought solitude and the simple eremitical life in the forests of France. \nHis Hermitage was at a village now known as Saint-Fiacre\, where he showed hospitality to travellers and maintained a vegetable and herb garden\, so he is often depicted holding a gardener’s spade. He is Patron Saint of gardeners\, of vegetable and flower growers\, herbalists and florists. \nRead the Wikipedia article about St Fiacre \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sustainability Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:St Hildegard of Bingen (c 1098 – 1179) \nSt Hildegard was a German Benedictine Abbess with a list of talents too great to list here – but described in a Wikipedia page about her … As well as her fame throughout Christendom as a visionary\, a composer of music and lyrics\, poetess and playwright\, she is also known as a distinguished practitioner and writer in  medicine and the natural sciences. \nHildegard strongly believed in humankind’s intrinsic relationship with the whole of God’s creation in the Universe. As evil and disease had become part of human life through the Fall of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden\, she advocated the idea of ‘viriditas‘ – literally ‘greening’ human health and wellbeing by once more connecting ourselves with the natural world. This was not remotely in a ‘new age’ sort of way\, but through reconciliation with God\, with one another\, and with the earth He created for us. \nSt Hildegard was made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Days: St Joseph Cupertino\, the Special Needs Saint!
DESCRIPTION:Today is the Feast Day of St Joseph Cupertino (1603-1663). He came from such a poor family that he was born in a stable – like Jesus! Growing up he had ecstatic religious visions and made frequent outbursts and sudden leaps and levitations. This behaviour continued throughout his life and caused him to be ostracised for a time from the religious communities he joined\, as they found him too ‘disruptive’. Today\, he is venerated as a Patron Saint of people who are neuro-diverse\, have learning difficulties or other special needs. \nNot only does this make him one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’ – but the Diocese of Leeds Cupertino Group is also named after him. Fr Frank Smith describes what the Group is all about … \nTHE CUPERTINO GROUP \n‘Very simply\, we are a group of people who meet once a month to celebrate Mass together with our children who have learning or sensory difficulties. All are welcome. If any child feels like being silent\, making a noise\, shouting out or screaming\, that’s wonderful – the Lord receives it all and turns it into praise and no one in the church is judging. \nThere are sensory devices and ear defenders if required and musical instruments for the children to use at the final hymn. Some of our families have stayed away from church for various reasons but through experiencing our celebrations together\, our hope is that they will become far more comfortable and attend their own parish Masses and community too. \nFollowing our Mass we gather in the hall for crafts centred around the liturgical season – and for tea\, coffee and cakes. This is also a great opportunity for parents to talk together and gain confidence and support from each other. \nWe are now into our third year and blessed to have the intercessions of Our Lady Undoer of Knots and St Joseph Cupertino to back us up!!’ \nThe next Cupertino Mass will be at 3pm on Sunday 29 September 2024 at St Joseph’s Wetherby.\nTo find out more about the Cupertino Group\, please contact Rosie via 07891 951949 or Fr Frank Smith on 01729 822 525. \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Joseph Cupertino: pray for us! \nReporting Safeguarding Concerns: If you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention call emergency services on 999. Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding can be contacted in confidence by email via Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints Day: SS Michael\, Raphael and Gabriel\, Archangels
DESCRIPTION:St Michael is the Archangel who leads and supports us in the battle against ‘the world\, the flesh and the devil’. Through the power of God\, he is victorious against evil – and that makes him one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’. \nThere is a well-known prayer to invoke St Michael’s protection …: \nHoly Michael\, Archangel\, defend us in the day of battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him\, we humbly pray; and do thou\, O Prince of the Heavenly Host\, by the power of God\, thrust down to hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.\nAmen. \n  \nSt Raphael\, mentioned in the Book of Tobit\, is a protector and healer. As the saint who will protect the vulnerable and bring healing to those who have experienced any type of abuse\, St Raphael is the subject of an icon which the Bishop has commissioned for Leeds Cathedral from the artist Martin Earle. \nIf you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention call emergency services on 999. Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding can be contacted in confidence by email via Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk – or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. SUMMARY:Sustainability Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:St Francis of Assisi (c 1181 – 1226) \nDeclared Patron Saint of Ecology and the Environment by Pope St John Paul II in 1979\, St Francis is one of the Church’s most beloved saints. As well as being known for preaching to the birds and the fishes\, taming the wild Wolf of Gubbio\, and loving all of God’s Creation\, St Francis’s true love was seeing Our Lord Jesus Christ in his care for those who were poor or marginalised. He himself had given up a life of riches and luxury to ‘live simply’ as a Friar. Today’s Franciscans also have a special care for showing God’s love for our brothers and sisters experiencing poverty\, and who are most likely to be adversely affected by climate change. \nPope Leo XIV declared that 2026 – the 800th anniversary of St Francis of Assisi’s death – should be a Year of St Francis across the Catholic Church. A Plenary Indulgence may be obtained (under the usual conditions) at any Franciscan Religious House\, or any of the churches dedicated to St Francis of Assisi across the Dioceses of Leeds\, Middlesbrough and Hallam. \nLeeds: \nThe Franciscan Brothers of the Renewal\, St Pio Friary and St Patrick’s Mission in Bradford BD1 2RU\nChurch of St Francis of Assisi\, Eccleshill BD2 2JU\nChurch of St Francis of Assisi\, Holbeck LS11 6TN\nChurch of St Francis of Assisi\, Morley LS27 9NF \nMiddlesbrough:\nChurches of St Francis of Assisi\, Acklam TS8 4RL and St Clare of Assisi\, Coulby Newham TS8 0TW\nChurch of St Francis of Assisi\, Hull HU8 0ND \nHallam:\nChurch of St Francis of Assisi\, Sheffield S10 5SD\nChurch of Our Lady of Sorrows and St Francis of Assisi\, Armthorpe DN3 2DB\n(Hallam also has a Catholic Multi-Academy Trust dedicated to St Francis of Assisi) \nFind out more about the life of St Francis of Assisi from actual Franciscans! \nWe also remember St Francis especially at Christmas time\, as it was he who first initiated the idea of a Nativity crib scene\, with a manger and animals of the stable!

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Nicholas
DESCRIPTION:Upon the death of his rich parents\, St Nicholas is said to have distributed their wealth to the poor\, which may in part be the origin of his role as the gift-giver\, ‘Santa Claus’ – but two other stories in particular about St Nicholas’ generosity and kindness explain why\, amongst his many other patronages\, St Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Children. The stories also illustrate why he is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’\, protecting children from harm and rescuing girls from being forced into prostitution. \nOne tale concerns St Nicholas hearing of a man who had lost all his money and was unable to provide dowries for his three young daughters. At that time\, with no marriage or work prospects the girls may well have had to support themselves through prostitution. Secretly\, Nicholas placed three bags of gold as dowries for the girls – and as well as saving them from a life of danger and humiliation\, further cemented his reputation for giving presents in secret and without expectation of thanks. A later story has St Nicholas rescuing three children who have been murdered\, bringing them back to life by invoking the name of the Lord. The ‘literal’ truth of these stories is less relevant compared with the message that\, like St Nicholas\, it is our Christian duty to keep one another safe from harm – especially those who are most vulnerable – and to support our commitment to Safeguarding in our churches and communities. \nIf you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention\, call emergency services on 999. Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding can be contacted in confidence by email via Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Josephine Bakhita
DESCRIPTION:As the Patron Saint of all Victims and Survivors of Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery\, St Josephine Bakhita (Feast Day 8 February) was kidnapped from her home in Sudan aged just nine and sold into slavery. She is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’ – and this is a prayer for her intercession to help us combat these evils and to support and comfort all who have been trafficked\, enslaved or otherwise exploited: \nO God\, who led Saint Josephine Bakhita from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and a bride of Christ\, grant\, we pray\, that by her example we may show constant love for the Lord Jesus crucified\, remaining steadfast in charity and prompt to show compassion.\nAmen. \nFor more information on how the Catholic Church combats Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery\, visit the website of the Santa Marta Group – an alliance of police chiefs and bishops to bring system change to end human trafficking. \nIf someone is in immediate danger\, please call 999. SUMMARY:Feast Day of Blessed Ceferino Giménez Malla: Patron of Gypsies\, Roma & Travellers
DESCRIPTION:On the Feast Day of the Patron of Gypsies\, Roma and Travellers\, we remember in our prayers all members of those communities in our Diocese. \nBlessed Ceferino Giménez Malla (1864 – 1936) was born in Spain to a Catholic Roma Gypsy family. \n\n\nDuring the Spanish Civil War\, Ceferino intervened on behalf of a priest who was being arrested – and was himself taken away and imprisoned with around 350 others in a monastery which the authorities had seized to use as a prison. \nIt is said that when asked if he was carrying a weapon\, Ceferino affirmed that he was and showed the soldiers his Rosary! Told that if he handed over his Rosary beads he would be freed\, Ceferino refused – and so it happened that on 9 August 1936\, Ceferino and others were driven to the cemetery where they would be shot and buried in a mass grave. Holding his Rosary\, Ceferino kept on praying and loudly shouting\, ‘Long live Christ the King!’ \n\n\nHe was beatified by Pope St John Paul II on May 4\, 1997. The Holy Father said that Ceferino ‘knew how to sow harmony and solidarity among his own\, also mediating conflicts that sometimes blur the relationship between non-Roma and Roma\, showing Christ’s love knows no boundaries of race or culture’. \nFind out more about Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller people in our region by visiting the website of the charity Leeds GATE: https://www.leedsgate.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Days: St Rita
DESCRIPTION:St Rita of Cascia (1381-1457) became an Augustinian nun after being widowed. She had previously endured 18 years of marriage to a rich\, but quick-tempered and violent husband. She prayed constantly for her husband to experience a change of heart – and he did. When he was later killed in a ‘vendetta’ or ‘honour-feud’\, she prevented her sons from seeking revenge. St Rita is now a Patron Saint of all people suffering spousal abuse and family feuds\, so is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’. Anyone who brings concerns or allegations to the notice of the Church will be responded to sensitively\, respectfully and seriously. All concerns and allegations will be addressed using the Church’s national procedures and in a timely manner. The Catholic Safeguarding Standard Agency (CSSA) can also be contacted on 0207 901 1920 or via email at admin@catholicsafeguarding.org.uk \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Rita of Cascia: pray for us! \n

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Maria Goretti
DESCRIPTION:Today is the Feast Day of St Maria Goretti. In 1902\, Maria was just 11 years old when she was killed whilst resisting a rapist. Maria’s horrific story of suffering from the last century highlights the continuing importance of today’s commitment to Safeguarding in the Catholic Church to combat all forms of abuse – not only of children\, but also of adults at risk. \nVisit our Safeguarding website for more information on all aspects of Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds – and how to get in touch\, in confidence\, with our Safeguarding team via safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk.  \nIn addition to St Maria Goretti\, there are many other ‘Safeguarding Saints’\, whose Feast Days are remembered in our Events Calendar. Some of them were themselves victims and survivors of various forms of abuse\, including human trafficking and domestic violence. Others are Saints to whom we can all pray to intercede for strength to bear suffering and for protection against the evils which undermine the sacred human dignity of God’s beloved children – especially the most vulnerable. \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Maria Goretti: pray for us!
