SUMMARY:Feast Day of Blessed Ceferino Giménez Malla: Patron of Gypsies\, Roma & Travellers
DESCRIPTION:On the Feast Day of the Patron of Gypsies\, Roma and Travellers\, we remember in our prayers all members of those communities in our Diocese. \nBlessed Ceferino Giménez Malla (1864 – 1936) was born in Spain to a Catholic Roma Gypsy family. \n\n\nDuring the Spanish Civil War\, Ceferino intervened on behalf of a priest who was being arrested – and was himself taken away and imprisoned with around 350 others in a monastery which the authorities had seized to use as a prison. \nIt is said that when asked if he was carrying a weapon\, Ceferino affirmed that he was and showed the soldiers his Rosary! Told that if he handed over his Rosary beads he would be freed\, Ceferino refused – and so it happened that on 9 August 1936\, Ceferino and others were driven to the cemetery where they would be shot and buried in a mass grave. Holding his Rosary\, Ceferino kept on praying and loudly shouting\, ‘Long live Christ the King!’ \n\n\nHe was beatified by Pope St John Paul II on May 4\, 1997. The Holy Father said that Ceferino ‘knew how to sow harmony and solidarity among his own\, also mediating conflicts that sometimes blur the relationship between non-Roma and Roma\, showing Christ’s love knows no boundaries of race or culture’. \nFind out more about Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller people in our region by visiting the website of the charity Leeds GATE: https://www.leedsgate.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Days: St Rita
DESCRIPTION:St Rita of Cascia (1381-1457) became an Augustinian nun after being widowed. She had previously endured 18 years of marriage to a rich\, but quick-tempered and violent husband. She prayed constantly for her husband to experience a change of heart – and he did. When he was later killed in a ‘vendetta’ or ‘honour-feud’\, she prevented her sons from seeking revenge. St Rita is now a Patron Saint of all people suffering spousal abuse and family feuds\, so is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’. \nReporting Safeguarding Concerns: If you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention call emergency services on 999. Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding can be contacted in confidence by email via Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. Anyone who brings concerns or allegations to the notice of the Church will be responded to sensitively\, respectfully and seriously. All concerns and allegations will be addressed using the Church’s national procedures and in a timely manner. The Catholic Safeguarding Standard Agency (CSSA) can also be contacted on 0207 901 1920 or via email at admin@catholicsafeguarding.org.uk \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Rita of Cascia: pray for us! \n

SUMMARY:Sustainability Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:St Medardus of Noyon (c 456 – 545) was a Frankish Bishop and is an intercessor against bad weather – and for rain when needed for good harvests and crops! He is also a Patron of vintners and brewers\, prisoners and captives and of people suffering mental ill health. \nRead more about him in Wikipedia \nSt Medardus is depicted on the coat of arms as Patron Saint of the German town of Ludenscheid\, which since 1950 has been twinned with Brighouse – so he’s practically a local! \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Maria Goretti
DESCRIPTION:Today is the Feast Day of St Maria Goretti. In 1902\, Maria was just 11 years old when she was killed whilst resisting a rapist. Maria’s horrific story of suffering from the last century highlights the continuing importance of today’s commitment to Safeguarding in the Catholic Church to combat all forms of abuse – not only of children\, but also of adults at risk. \nVisit our Safeguarding website for more information on all aspects of Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds – and how to get in touch\, in confidence\, with our Safeguarding team via safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk.  \nIn addition to St Maria Goretti\, there are many other ‘Safeguarding Saints’\, whose Feast Days are remembered in our Events Calendar. Some of them were themselves victims and survivors of various forms of abuse\, including human trafficking and domestic violence. Others are Saints to whom we can all pray to intercede for strength to bear suffering and for protection against the evils which undermine the sacred human dignity of God’s beloved children – especially the most vulnerable. \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Maria Goretti: pray for us!

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Benedict
DESCRIPTION:St Benedict of Nursia (480-547) is a Saint whose intercession is invoked for many reasons\, including to protect and comfort those suffering spiritual abuse – so he is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’. \nA short prayer to St Benedict for protection: \nThrough your intercession may we be delivered from temptation\, spiritual oppression\, physical ills\, and disease. Protect us from drug and alcohol abuse\, impurity and immorality\, objectionable companions\, and negative attitudes. Admirable Saint and Doctor of Humility\, you practiced what you taught\, assiduously praying for God’s glory and lovingly fulfilling all work for God and the benefit of all human beings. You know the many physical and spiritual dangers that surround us today\, often caused or occasioned by human inventions. Guard us against poisoning of the body as well as of mind and soul\, and thus be truly a ‘Blessed’ one for us.\nAmen. \nSpiritual abuse can happen in families or communities and in many ways: to find out more\, visit the Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding website and the website of the Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency (CSSA) \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Benedict: pray for us.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:St Benedict of Nursia (480 – 547) \nSt Benedict is perhaps one of our best saintly advocates of ‘Living Simply and Sustainably’. His ‘Rule’ continues to be the basis of monastic life today – and it has lessons for all Christians of our own time\, as St Benedict warns against consumerism and excessive attachment to possessions\, and advocates prioritising our spiritual life over worldly materialism\, so as to live and die in holiness. \nRead more about the ‘Rule of St Benedict’ which advocates a simple\, balanced life of prayer\, work\, study and rest!

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Monica

SUMMARY:Sustainability Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:St Fiacre (died c 670) \nBorn in Ireland\, St Fiacre became a monk and was known as a skilled herbalist (like the fictional ‘Brother Cadfael’!) – but as his fame spread\, he sought solitude and the simple eremitical life in the forests of France. \nHis Hermitage was at a village now known as Saint-Fiacre\, where he showed hospitality to travellers and maintained a vegetable and herb garden\, so he is often depicted holding a gardener’s spade. He is Patron Saint of gardeners\, of vegetable and flower growers\, herbalists and florists. \nRead the Wikipedia article about St Fiacre \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sustainability Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:St Hildegard of Bingen (c 1098 – 1179) \nSt Hildegard was a German Benedictine Abbess with a list of talents too great to list here – but described in a Wikipedia page about her … As well as her fame throughout Christendom as a visionary\, a composer of music and lyrics\, poetess and playwright\, she is also known as a distinguished practitioner and writer in  medicine and the natural sciences. \nHildegard strongly believed in humankind’s intrinsic relationship with the whole of God’s creation in the Universe. As evil and disease had become part of human life through the Fall of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden\, she advocated the idea of ‘viriditas‘ – literally ‘greening’ human health and wellbeing by once more connecting ourselves with the natural world. This was not remotely in a ‘new age’ sort of way\, but through reconciliation with God\, with one another\, and with the earth He created for us. \nSt Hildegard was made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Days: St Joseph Cupertino\, the Special Needs Saint!
DESCRIPTION:Today is the Feast Day of St Joseph Cupertino (1603-1663). He came from such a poor family that he was born in a stable – like Jesus! Growing up he had ecstatic religious visions and made frequent outbursts and sudden leaps and levitations. This behaviour continued throughout his life and caused him to be ostracised for a time from the religious communities he joined\, as they found him too ‘disruptive’. Today\, he is venerated as a Patron Saint of people who are neuro-diverse\, have learning difficulties or other special needs. \nNot only does this make him one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’ – but the Diocese of Leeds Cupertino Group is also named after him. Fr Frank Smith describes what the Group is all about … \nTHE CUPERTINO GROUP \n‘Very simply\, we are a group of people who meet once a month to celebrate Mass together with our children who have learning or sensory difficulties. All are welcome. If any child feels like being silent\, making a noise\, shouting out or screaming\, that’s wonderful – the Lord receives it all and turns it into praise and no one in the church is judging. \nThere are sensory devices and ear defenders if required and musical instruments for the children to use at the final hymn. Some of our families have stayed away from church for various reasons but through experiencing our celebrations together\, our hope is that they will become far more comfortable and attend their own parish Masses and community too. \nFollowing our Mass we gather in the hall for crafts centred around the liturgical season – and for tea\, coffee and cakes. This is also a great opportunity for parents to talk together and gain confidence and support from each other. \nWe are now into our third year and blessed to have the intercessions of Our Lady Undoer of Knots and St Joseph Cupertino to back us up!!’ \nThe next Cupertino Mass will be at 3pm on Sunday 29 September 2024 at St Joseph’s Wetherby.\nTo find out more about the Cupertino Group\, please contact Rosie via 07891 951949 or Fr Frank Smith on 01729 822 525. \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Joseph Cupertino: pray for us! \nReporting Safeguarding Concerns: If you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention call emergency services on 999.
