DESCRIPTION:Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is collaborating with the Word on Fire Institute (WOFI) on a series of live discussions about the Middle East and Africa. \nThe Persecuted Church series will feature conversations between ACN staff\, Word on Fire representatives and theologians\, as well as personal witness testimonies from clergy and lay people from Nigeria\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Egypt and the Holy Land. \nThe aim is to educate the laity about the reality of modern-day persecution\, and to explore the relationship between martyrdom and evangelisation. \nThe sessions will be livestreamed via the WOFI platform between Monday 3 and Friday 7 November 2025\, with 14 discussions in total. They will also be recorded and available to watch later for members of the Institute. DESCRIPTION:On 16 November 2025\, we unite with thousands of churches across the country to mark Safeguarding Sunday. \nSafeguarding Sunday is a day to highlight the importance of safeguarding within the Diocese of Leeds\, the Catholic Church\, and across society.  It is a day to ensure all our parishioners and communities understand what safeguarding is within the context of the Catholic Church\, the structures in place to keep our communities safe\, our commitment to those that have been harmed by abuse\, and the support available to anyone who wishes to raise a concern. It is a chance to listen and to talk together about how we can create places that are safer for everyone. \nPlease consider adding a prayer of intercession at Sunday Masses on 16 November and perhaps use this Sunday as an opportunity to thank Parish Safeguarding Reps for all the work they do in contributing to safeguarding within the Church. \nAn example of a prayer might be: \nOn this Safeguarding Sunday we pray for those who are vulnerable and in need of protection.\nHelp each one of us to play our part in creating safer places for all your people.\nBless all those who serve in a safeguarding role within our parish and diocese;\nthank you for the willingness and time they give to this important task.\nLord in your Mercy\nHear our prayer.

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Nicholas
DESCRIPTION:Upon the death of his rich parents\, St Nicholas is said to have distributed their wealth to the poor\, which may in part be the origin of his role as the gift-giver\, ‘Santa Claus’ – but two other stories in particular about St Nicholas’ generosity and kindness explain why\, amongst his many other patronages\, St Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Children. The stories also illustrate why he is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’\, protecting children from harm and rescuing girls from being forced into prostitution. \nOne tale concerns St Nicholas hearing of a man who had lost all his money and was unable to provide dowries for his three young daughters. At that time\, with no marriage or work prospects the girls may well have had to support themselves through prostitution. Secretly\, Nicholas placed three bags of gold as dowries for the girls – and as well as saving them from a life of danger and humiliation\, further cemented his reputation for giving presents in secret and without expectation of thanks. A later story has St Nicholas rescuing three children who have been murdered\, bringing them back to life by invoking the name of the Lord. The ‘literal’ truth of these stories is less relevant compared with the message that\, like St Nicholas\, it is our Christian duty to keep one another safe from harm – especially those who are most vulnerable – and to support our commitment to Safeguarding in our churches and communities. \nIf you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention\, call emergency services on 999.
