SUMMARY:Safeguarding Saints' Day: St Nicholas
DESCRIPTION:Upon the death of his rich parents\, St Nicholas is said to have distributed their wealth to the poor\, which may in part be the origin of his role as the gift-giver\, ‘Santa Claus’ – but two other stories in particular about St Nicholas’ generosity and kindness explain why\, amongst his many other patronages\, St Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Children. The stories also illustrate why he is one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’\, protecting children from harm and rescuing girls from being forced into prostitution. \nOne tale concerns St Nicholas hearing of a man who had lost all his money and was unable to provide dowries for his three young daughters. At that time\, with no marriage or work prospects the girls may well have had to support themselves through prostitution. Secretly\, Nicholas placed three bags of gold as dowries for the girls – and as well as saving them from a life of danger and humiliation\, further cemented his reputation for giving presents in secret and without expectation of thanks. A later story has St Nicholas rescuing three children who have been murdered\, bringing them back to life by invoking the name of the Lord. The ‘literal’ truth of these stories is less relevant compared with the message that\, like St Nicholas\, it is our Christian duty to keep one another safe from harm – especially those who are most vulnerable – and to support our commitment to Safeguarding in our churches and communities. \nIf you have information of a safeguarding nature where a child or adult at risk is in immediate danger or requires immediate medical attention\, call emergency services on 999. Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding can be contacted in confidence by email via Safeguarding@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or speak to our Safeguarding Team on 0113 2618046. Anyone who brings concerns or allegations to the notice of the Church will be responded to sensitively\, respectfully and seriously. All concerns and allegations will be addressed using the Church’s national procedures and in a timely manner. The Catholic Safeguarding Standard Agency (CSSA) can also be contacted on 0207 901 1920 or via email at admin@catholicsafeguarding.org.uk \nSafeguarding is Everybody’s Business – so EVERYBODY is invited to share their thoughts with us about Safeguarding in the Diocese of Leeds\, in confidence\, using our website’s Safeguarding Feedback Form! \n \nSt Nicholas: pray for us!

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:On Holocaust Memorial Day\, we remember ALL who suffered persecution or lost their lives under the Nazis – especially the six million Jewish men\, women and children\, and further millions targeted by that regime for racial\, religious\, social or political reasons. \nIn our own Diocese\, two of our parishes are under the patronage of Saints who fell victim to the Holocaust: St Maximilan Kolbe and St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Some of the fiercest opposition to the Nazis came from German\, Austrian and Polish Catholic clergy and laity who strongly declared Catholicism and Nazism to be utterly incompatible (read more in an online article accessible via this link). \nThis year\, the Lord Mayor of Leeds will open the 2026 Civic Remembrance Event for Holocaust Memorial Day. This will include a keynote speech by Tracy Craggs from Holocaust Centre North. Tracy has been working with the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association for 18 years\, latterly as Head of Collections for its Holocaust Centre North based at the University of Huddersfield\, where she is responsible for working with survivors and their families in securing their wonderful collections for the future. She is also fortunate to have a dual role\, looking after the needs of survivors based in Yorkshire. \nThere will be a multimedia (photography\, video\, sound\, and spoken word) performance of Sight by artist Laura Fisher\, focusing on experiences by Holocaust survivor Iby Knill. The artist retraced Iby’s journey across the no man’s land between Czechoslovakia and Hungary in February 1942. This attempt to retrace Iby’s path of survival echoes a similar journey Iby’s son Chris Knill made to Auschwitz-Birkenau to understand the places that witnessed pivotal parts of his mother’s life. \nMusic will be performed by the United Hebrew Congregation choir with Rabbi Alby Chait MBE. The event will include a reading of the seven statements of commitments with candles lit by representatives of the different groups persecuted in the Holocaust\, by Nazi persecution and in the subsequent genocides which followed. A memorial prayer will be sung by Rabbi Anthony Gilbert to close the event. \nFree Tickets can be booked via the link below: \nHolocaust Memorial Day 2026: Bridging the Generations: What’s On: City Varieties Music Hall: Leeds Heritage Theatres \nLCC HMD 2026 Poster

SUMMARY:Lenten Journey with the Popes!
DESCRIPTION:Liam Kelly is a Trustee of the Diocese of Leeds. He works at Ampleforth Abbey and has written a number of books\, including ‘Lent in 50 Moments’\, a series of reflections from Ash Wednesday to Easter Wednesday. \nEvery Sunday and Wednesday in Lent and every day in Holy Week\, join Liam’s series of meditations and questions for reflections\, linked to the papal Messages for Lent published in recent years\, to help us prepare for the joy of the Resurrection. \nFollow the link to join this Lenten journey with the Popes: \nhttps://hozana.org/en/community/12849-journey-through-lent-with-the-popes/landing?course=direct&origin=community-share&source=Share%2520Link&uik=1811976r6363d8eaa48493.49847803&utm_source=share&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=Community_12849 \nWhy Join? \nThe season of Lent is about returning to God with all our heart\, stripping ourselves of worldly trappings and returning to the heart\, returning to what is essential. In his 6th century Rule\, Saint Benedict begins his chapter on Lent with the words: “The life of the monk ought to be a continuous Lent” – to which you might add: ‘Well\, I’m glad I’m not a monk’\, or ‘And I thought 40 days was bad enough!’. But if Lent is truly a time for renewal\, then in some ways it should be Lent every day\, since each day we are called to renew our trust and hope in the Lord\, the giver of life. This Lent is a time for us to renew our faith and continue on our pilgrim journey towards the celebration of the Resurrection.
