Safeguarding Saints Day: SS Michael, Raphael and Gabriel, Archangels

September 29, 2024
Event Series (See All)

St Michael is the Archangel who leads and supports us in the battle against ‘the world, the flesh and the devil’. Through the power of God, he is victorious against evil – and that makes him one of our ‘Safeguarding Saints’.

There is a well-known prayer to invoke St Michael’s protection …:

Holy Michael, Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

St Raphael, mentioned in the Book of Tobit, is a protector and healer. As the saint who will protect the vulnerable and bring healing to those who have experienced any type of abuse, St Raphael is the subject of an icon which the Bishop has commissioned for Leeds Cathedral from the artist Martin Earle.
