A History of the Word in Objects from the Diocese of Leeds

Experiencing the Word of God in Art

Throughout the Year of the Word, we shall be showcasing various artefacts from the Diocese’s churches and institutions in a series of podcasts entitled “A History of the Word in Objects from the Diocese of Leeds”.

Each object has a connection to the Bible and the podcasts include interviews with local people, historical background information and a guided meditation.

Episode 1 – Skipton’s Saintly Stone

To mark the Feast of St Stephen, the first podcast features an unusual stone held by the Parish of St Stephen in Skipton. Click here to listen.

The podcast is also available on this Youtube link.

Episode 2 – God’s Granny: Keighley’s Statue of St Anne

In this podcast we listened to the reactions of St Anne’s primary school pupils and staff about a statue of St Anne teaching a young Mary and also spoke to other members of the Parish about the involvement of families.

The podcast is available on this Youtube link.

Episode 3 – Gabriel’s Message for Harrogate

In celebration of the Feast of the Annunciation (25th March) for this podcast we travelled to St John Fisher School in Harrogate. The School Chapel contains an altar carving depicting the Annunciation scene. Scripture Champions Deacon Henry Longbottom and Dr Gregory Stacey met up with School Librarian Mrs Pollard and School Chaplain Mr Atkin. After a guided Lectio Divina in the Lady Chapel in front of the Annunciation carving, we hear the reactions of pupils. The beautiful photographs accompanying the podcast were taken by pupils studying GCSE Photography.
