On the 12th day of the month traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Castleford crowned Our Lady ‘Queen of the May’!
At the Church of St Joseph – ‘her spouse most chaste’ – Mary was honoured by parishioners of all ages, joining with Parish Priest Fr John Aveyard in singing some of the Catholic Church’s treasury of Marian hymns and hearing a Reading from Scripture.
The statue of Our Lady was crowned with a circlet of white flowers and the congregation processed to bring their own ‘flowers of the rarest’ to place at her feet, whilst singing O Mary, We Crown Thee with Blossoms Today. This was followed by the Litany of Loreto, Intercessions and a Solemn Blessing.
St Joseph’s Parish has a thriving Union of Catholic Mothers (UCM), where the Mother of God is a model and inspiration for Christian women’s particular gifts and charisms. The Service in Praise of Our Lady was a beautiful occasion and the intention is to make this an annual parish event in Mary’s Month of May.
