Cathedral’s Light Night Honoured Our Newest Saint

In the space of just over three hours on the evening of Friday 11 October literally thousands of people were welcomed inside  Leeds Cathedral on Light Night Leeds 2019, by the Dean, Fr Matthew Habron.

The theme of the evening at the Cathedral was Lead Kindly Light  the title of a hymn written by John Henry Newman in 1833. Two days after Light Night, on Sunday, 13 October, Blessed John Henry Newman was canonised by Pope Francis at a ceremony at St Peter’s, Rome.

During Light Night, through word and music, written and composed by Newman, there were opportunities to reflect on the place of Light in the life of faith.  St John Henry Newman’s own life story has illuminated the faith journey of countless people over the years, and visitors to the Cathedral were encouraged to allow themselves to be enlightened by his words, prayers and hymns.

The exterior of the Cathedral was floodlit for the occasion and inside the singing and the music, which were both outstanding,  were performed by the Chamber Choir and Trombone Quartet of the University of Texas at El Paso, who are currently visiting Leeds.
