Cathedral Mass for Our Deceased Bishops and Clergy

For you my soul is thirsting, O God, my God

On Friday 19 November Bishop Marcus led a concelebrated Memorial Mass at Leeds Cathedral for the deceased bishops, priests and deacons of the Diocese. This annual event had to be cancelled in November 2020 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions on public worship in place at the time.

With the Bishop on the Sanctuary were the Provost and Canons of the Cathedral Chapter, one of whom, Canon John Galvin preached the homily.

Canon Galvin, Parish Priest of St William of York, Morley, reminded the congregation of the ancient tradition in the Church of remembering the dead, and offering prayers for the repose of their souls. He went on to say how it is, perhaps, incumbent on the parishioners of today to do the same for all the clergy whose ministry in the past built up the Diocese and its parishes.

This year’s Mass was an opportunity to come together and to pray in particular for all those priests who have died since the previous Memorial Mass in November 2019, and who are named below:
