Holy Week and Easter 2023 saw large congregations gather at the Cathedral for the liturgies which recall Our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection.
On Palm Sunday, 2 April, Bishop Marcus celebrated the Solemn Liturgy of Palm Sunday, beginning in Victoria Gardens, outside the City Art Gallery, for the Blessing of Palms and the procession to the Cathedral where Mass was celebrated in the presence of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Leeds.
The Bishop led the concelebrated Chrism Mass with the priests of the diocese, on the morning of Wednesday 5 April. During the Mass the priests renewed their ordination promises and the Sacred Oils for use during the coming year were blessed.
The Easter Triduum began on the evening of Maundy Thursday when Bishop Marcus celebrated the Solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper; on Good Friday afternoon he presided at the Solemn Liturgy of the Passion.
On the evening of Saturday 8 April, the Bishop led the Easter Vigil, the most important liturgical celebration of the Church’s year.
The service began outside the Radisson Hotel on Cookridge Street for the Blessing of the Easter Fire and the Procession to the Cathedral, for the First Mass of Easter, Baptisms, and Reception of people into Full Communion, and Confirmations.
On Easter Sunday morning, the Solemn Mass of Easter Day was celebrated by the Bishop.
