The Bishop’s Pastoral Letter for the Season of Creation was read at Masses over the weekend of 28/29 September, in advance of the Feast of St Francis of Assisi (4 October), 45 years after Pope St John Paul II declared St Francis to be Patron Saint of all those who work for Ecology and the Environment.
This date is also the end of the Church’s ‘official’ annual Season of Creation (1 September to 4 October) – but in truth, if we are to live and act in hope to save and protect God’s creation from the effects of climate change, which disproportionately affect those living in the poorest and most vulnerable parts of the world, this ‘season’ should last all year round, giving us at least FOUR Seasons of Creation – plus the SIX Seasons of the Church (Advent, Christmas, ‘Ordinary Time’ after Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and ‘Ordinary Time’ after Pentecost).
…so, with that and the forthcoming Jubilee of Hope in mind …
… we are seeking to promote and publicise ALL types of parish, school, deanery or diocese-wide environmentally sustainable events and activities to celebrate each new season of the Year and/or of the Church in the parishes of the Diocese of Leeds – and to support our brothers and sisters facing seasonal challenges across the world.
PLEASE email YOUR ideas to environment@dioceseofleeds.org.uk – and THANK YOU in advance!
