MY EXPERIENCE READING ST MARK’S GOSPEL ON FRIDAY NIGHT
On Friday 3 February, 30 young people from First Martyrs and St Cuthbert’s came together at the Kennedy’s home for a reading of St Mark’s Gospel. We were also joined by Mgr Moger, Parish Priest at First Martyrs, Br Simon and Br Thomas (who are based at The Friary at St Patrick’s), Anna Cowell, Diocesan Youth Officer and some adults from the 2 Parishes. Fr Lister from St Cuthbert’s was unable to attend as he was giving instruction to some people who are interested in becoming Catholics.
I got there at 7.30pm and had chance to talk and catch up with my friends before we joined together as a group. I was amazed at how many people turned up – the room was full.
After plenty of talking amongst friends we settled down. We began with a prayer led by Father Philip before reading from the Gospel. Each person got to read parts of the gospel which made it more meaningful and easier to understand. It was good to do it with people of my own age and in a more relaxed setting. Time flew by as it was such a meaningful and enjoyable experience. However, as the last page was read we were a bit numb (some of us, including Fr Philip, were sitting on cushions/pillows on the floor) and our tummies were rumbling as we could smell the pizzas arriving at the door.
As we tucked in, my friends and I enjoyed talking to the Brothers about their lives and experiences in America. Whilst it was an enjoyable evening with some laughter, it was also a very meaningful and rewarding experience for us all.
