Discernment Events - Discernment Evenings

Discernment group

The monthly discernment group helps men, aged 17 or over, who think that the Lord may be calling them to the priesthood to reflect further on this possibility. Our Friday meetings, are characterised by prayer, solid catechesis and good fellowship. In addition members are encouraged to participate in key diocesan events.

The meetings, which take place in the Chaplaincy at Leeds Trinity and All Saints, Horsforth, begin with a cup of tea at 6.45pm. At 7.00pm we have a Holy Hour in the chapel which concludes with Evening Prayer and Benediction. There is an opportunity to go to confession during this period. Afterwards, a guest speaker gives a half-hour talk and those present share a meal. The dates of all meetings and the themes of the talks are listed below.

The talks this year (2010) will focus intially on themes emerging from Pope Benedict's Letter to mark the beginning of the Year of the Priest and then on more general teachings in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

In addition to the Friday meetings, participants are encouraged to attend some other important events in the life of the diocese. They also meet with Fr Grogan every six weeks or so. If it appears that they may indeed have a vocation to the priesthood, they are assigned a spiritual director. All prospective seminarians are encouraged to engage in appropriate charitable work in their parishes.
