Eritrean Catholic Youth Choir On the Air
30th July 2018
The recent on-air success of young singers from the Diocese of Leeds continues as the Eritrean Youth Choir broadcasts on a local arts radio station.
Chapel FM exists to bring together different cultures and traditions and is based near St Gregory's presbytery in the Parish of Blessed John Henry Newman. As part of their annual Youth Music Festival, the station approached the Assistant Priest, Fr Ghebreyesus Ghebrezghi, who is also Chaplain to the Eritrean Catholic community in the Diocese, asking the Eritrean Catholic Youth Choir to perform some of their favourite hymns.
The choir sings at Mass (the Ge'ez Rite) at Holy Rosary and St Anne's Church and is called KIDANE MEHRET MEZEMIRAN, which means the Choir of Our Lady of Unfailing Help. The 20 members, young men and women between 18 and 25 years of age, usually sing to organ accompaniment.
The broadcast can be heard by following this link:
The choir is singing in the Tigrigna Eritrean language and the titles of the hymns roughly translate as:
- Lord of Heaven King of all the Earth
- Mary You are the Source of Holiness
- Through Jesus I am free
- No one greater than Jesus the Good Shepherd
- You are greatly admired by humanity
- Annunciation of the Angel
- O sweet Mary we believe in You to be our Ladder
