Rite of Election 2017
9th March 2017
On the First Sunday of Lent, 5 March, 2017, candidates from across the Diocese of Leeds came to the Cathedral to take part in a very special celebration: The Rite of Election -part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
People who wish to become Catholics have already spent some time preparing and studying the Catholic faith in their own parishes; now they come with their parish priests, their sponsors and their catechists to meet The Right Reverend Marcus Nigel Stock, 10th Bishop of Leeds, and to express publicly their intention to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.
The Rite of Election is celebrated by the Bishop in the Cathedral each Lent. It is for those who are to be received into the Church at Easter. Just as Christ chooses us and calls us by our name, the Bishop 'elects' the candidates who have made the commitment, asking:
'Do you wish to enter fully into the life of the Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist?'
The catechumens then respond: 'We do.'
Canon Timothy Swinglehurst assisted the Bishop in welcoming the catechumens as they inscribed their names in the Book of the Elect. Canon Swinglehurst is the Diocese of Leeds's newest Honorary Canon. He had been installed earlier that week by Provost John Aveyard in a Mass at St Patrick's, Huddersfield, concelebrated by the Provost and the Parish Priest, Canon Ian Smith.
